I.U.D.: The Proper Sex

Rating: 7.5 / Format: CD/LP / Label: The Social Registry

As a side project for its two members, Lizzie Bougatsos from Gang Gang Dance and Sadie Laska from Growing, I.U.D is a band where they freely exercise their ragged improv roots.

The music on The Proper Sex is a kind of stripped back, curdled version of those two bands; all washed out, primal psychedelia, marshall drumming and echo turned inward into what feels like listening to a private world; a communication between the two members you’re just privy to and are left to fathom out.

The music is created from stark elements: one-note Suicide style synth lines, and crashing marching band drums on ‘Glo Balls‘, echoing screams and porn tape collage on ‘Monk Hummer’; rough shrieking sampled loops, gigantic drums and stentorian vocals on ’911′. The Proper Sex is impressionistic rather than song based, scoured with in-jokes and chaotic intentions, building up the craziness towards the last track, ‘Girls Just Want To’, when the processed grindcore guitar slows down to a stop and Lizzie shouts “time to have sex”, before it all revs up again.
