Poland’s Unsound Festival will this year celebrate “horror – the pleasure of fear and unease”.

“The festival will explore the way that music and sound interact with visual images in horror films, and present artists inspired by horror film music. Other artists will perform music that causes feelings of fear or disquiet.”

Far from restricting the kind of music on offer, this concept actually seems to have really fired the curators’ collective imagination, resulting in a line-up as diverse as it is self-consciously devilish. You’ve got Zombie Zombie performing the songs of John Carpenter, and a preview of The Pretty One, a “neo-gothic ghost story on the thin line between concert, film and performance”, and a performance by the controversial Belgian theatre collective Abattoir Ferme, who’ll be presenting the work of musician Kreng.

There’s loads of other acts, not all of them obviously horror-centric: Joy Orbison, James Blake and The Moritz Von Oswald Trio are all on board, while the irrepressible Mordant Music will be building a nest for the occasion (seriously – look out for the ‘Nesst’, which will “represent the various studio spaces that Mordant has occupied over the years, and function as an emitter for both audio and visuals throughout the festival.”)

Oni Ayhun – who may or may not be a member of a very popular band and definitely is amazing – will bring his unique brand of unspooling techno to town. Also performing are Shackleton (live), Actress (live), Tim Hecker, Shining and Monno. Oh, and look out too for Touch-signed cellist (and maker of one of 2009’s finest albums, Without Sinking) Hildur Gudnadottir and new age synth poster-boy Oneohtrix Point Never.

Unsound will ake place in Krakow, Poland, between October 17 and 24. More info here.
