Modern lo-fi touchstone Nathan ‘Wavves’ Williams will return with a new album this summer.
Titled King of the Beach, it will be released on Bella Union on August 2, and follows a tempestuous 2009 for Williams that saw him fight on stage at the Pitchfork festival, fall out with band mates and all sorts of geeky shit.
According to the press sheet for King of the Beach, the album sees him “cut deeper into the bleeding throat catharsis and ‘60s sunshine soul” that he’s known for, while also “flipping out with elements of primitive electronics and psychedelic studio experimentation.”
“There was a conscious effort going into this that I didn’t want to make the same record again. I already made the same record twice, with the same fucking cover art,” says Williams. “It wasn’t overbearing, but I didn’t want to recreate something I’d done. I wanted to make something bigger, something stronger.”
King of the Beach was recorded over three months at Sweet Tea Recording, Mississippi, home of Dennis Herring, who produced the last two Modest Mouse albums and helped on this one.
