All week on the FACT website, you can stream the new Matthew Herbert-produced Empire EP by Berlin-based vocalist Barbara Panther.

Born in Rwanda, Panther grew up in Brussels before eventually making Berlin her home. The songs on Empire deal with “the universe, water and the moon, and their interdependencies”, and come produced by none other than Matthew Herbert, the audio legend who made a name for himself with his incredible house records and unique, innovative approach to form and sampling. In recent years he’s become more of a behind-the-boards producer, lending his touch to albums by Roisin Murphy, Micachu and The Invisible. He’s also worked with Bjork, Yoko Ono, R.E.M and many more.

The pair teamed up on Empire with the intention of generating “fascinating images in the listener’s mind”, such as on ‘Rise Up’, from the forthcoming, also Herbert-produced album Barbara Panther, where “Matthew had the idea of throwing real chains against an electric heater which conveys the feeling of living on a prison in this world.”

As you do. Empire is released on September 10 [Germany only] via City Slang.
