Editions Mego is reissuing two classic solo albums by Bruce Gilbert in one double vinyl package.

This Way (1984) and The Shivering Man (1987), the Wire co-founder’s first two proper solo outings, were originally released by Mute. They found the Wire co-founder in experimental mode: using synthesizers to investigate, in Mego’s words, “the grey border where abstract noise and rhythm co-exist with obscure melodies and song structures”. This Way has previously been reissued on CD by Mego, remastered by Russell Haswell; The Shivering Man has now received the same treatment, as well as being included in the double-whammy vinyl package.

This Way was recorded in the brief period between the demise of Dome (Gilbert’s studio-based, electronics-oriented partnership with Graham Lewis) and Wire reforming for first time. The centre-piece of the album is the diptych of ‘Do You Me? I Did’ and ‘Swamp’, long pieces commissioned for a work of the same name by choreographer Michael Clark. The Shivering Man found Gilbert developing the sounds and strategies of This Way, with guest contributions from Lewis and Angela Conway (AC Marias). Mego’s 25th anniversary CD edition includes a short Conway video featuring Michael Clark and originally broadcast in 1987 on Channel 4:

This Way is available on CD now, with The Shivering Man CD due out on May 9, the same day as the This Way with The Shivering Man vinyl package.
