The Boombox Project by Lyle Owerko is a new exhibition presented by London’s Whisper gallery in collaboration with XOYO.
The show is comprised of contemporary fine art portraits of, you guessed it, vintage boomboxes. Lyle Owerko is an acclaimed New York-based filmmaker and photographer, whose credits include making music videos for Rufus Wainwright and shooting the cover for the 9/11 issue of Time magazine.
Owerko’s love affair with boomboxes really ignited when, in Tokyo in 2001, he chanced upon a mint condition late-70s Victor JVC at a market. From there he began to collect and photograph ever-rarer and more obscure models, all of which have been documented in his book, The Boombox Project: The Machines, The Music, and The Urban Underground, which features an introduction by Spike Lee. This is the first time the full exhibition will be on public display in the UK.
The private view for the launch of The Boombox Project is at XOYO on Thursday 1 December. A selection of Owerko’s Boombox prints will be displayed, and there will be a live performance from Brooklyn’s Das Racist.
