In a recent interview with Dummy, Night Slugs’ Jam City talked about musical vortexes: making the listener feel as if the floor’s been pulled out from under them.

It’s something that DJ Champion, with his distinctive hollow basslines, seems to excel at. When his tracks drop, it’s a drop in the very literal sense – the bass hits, but other elements disappear, creating a kind of free-fall effect. Combined with Ruby Lee Ryder’s soft vocals on ‘Sensitivity’, the latest release on Champion’s Formula label, it makes you feel like you’re floating in space: as numbed, lost and vulnerable as UK Funky’s ever sounded.
