Metal Dance is a new, unmixed compilation of industrial, post-punk and EBM “classics and rarities” assembled by Trevor Jackson.

Set to be released by Strut on 2xCD, 2xLP gatefold and digital on February 20, 2012, it finds the Output Recordings founder drawing on the kind of dark-hearted, sexually charged dance music that he’s been repping in his DJ sets for years. Indeed, we can remember hearing Jackson play just this kind of stuff to rabid crowds a decade ago, back when electroclash ruled the clubs.

Right now industrial, EBM and post-punk electronic music seems to be enjoying another renaissance, this time with the emphasis on industrial, and born partly out of the minimal synth and cold wave reissue boom. Metal Dance is well-timed then, but doesn’t feel opportunistic, thanks to Jackson’s mature judgement and deep knowledge of his subject matter: pretty much everything on here is killer. Some of them you’ll know – Cabaret Voltaire’s ‘Seconds Too Late’, Pete Shelley’s ‘Witness The Change’ (Severed Heads’ ‘Dead Eyes Opened’, SPK’s ‘Metal Dance’, etc – others are more obscure, with Jackson favouring floor-friendly dub and club mixes from the original 12″s. Mark Stewart, Honey Bane, John Carpenter & Alan Howarth, Executive Slacks, Nitzer Ebb and DAF are some of the other artists featured; full tracklist below.

The artwork and packaging for the release is designed by Jackson himself. If EBM/industrial floats your boat, be sure to check out FACT’s 20 best, written by Richard Clouston (whose edit of Nitzer Ebb’s ‘Control I’m Here’ appears on Metal Dance).

We’ve got a copy of Metal Dance on vinyl to give away to one lucky FACT reader; if you’d like to be entered into the draw to win it, simply email your name and the words ‘metal dance’ to competitions@thevinylfactory.com. Our winner will be notified on or before February 20.
