Outside of his day job, Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood has amassed quite a reputation as a composer and arranger.

His score for Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood won substantial acclaim, and he’s subsequently put pen to manuscript paper for Japanese drama Norweigian Wood and last year’s We Need To Talk About Kevin. His dabblings in the world of classical orchestration continue with his new record with revered Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki.

The untitled album, streaming in full at NPR, counterpoints Penderecki originals with Greenwood’s responses. Penderecki’s 1960 piece Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima is placed alongside Greenwood’s Threnody-inspired Popcorn Superhet Receiver. Similarly, 1961’s Polymorphia feeds into Greenwood’s 48 Responses to Polymorphia. Traceable across works by both men is an interest extracting unusual tones and timbres from conventional orchestral instrumentation: these are warped and often disconcerting pieces.
