Kevin Shields "finishing off" new My Bloody Valentine album

In a short interview with Pitchfork, Kevin Shields has claimed that he’s in the process of “finishing off” the new My Bloody Valentine album.

We say “sort of”, as the party line for quite some time has been that a new My Bloody Valentine album is on the way – since around 1991, in fact. And various sources, such as Creation’s Alan McGee, have openly stated that it won’t happen (for various reasons, the main one of which seems to be Shields’ perfectionism / inability to finish stuff). Still, with those reissues finally due and a live reunion still in recent memory, maybe things have changed. Then again, maybe they haven’t.

In Shields’ words, he’s “Just finishing a record that I had started in the 90s. It was going to be, like, the next record. But it was already after the band had half split up, and me and Bilinda [Butcher] were left. Then we got back together. We never broke up, technically; I left the band for legal reasons once, I had to. But other than that, I’ve always said that we were always going to make a record again. You never know, we might finish it really quickly, and it might be up in a few months! I tend to work really quickly, suddenly, and I might be willing to do that right now. We’ll see!”

His second answer to Pitchfork‘s question, in fact, is simply “I need to finish it.” There’s a lot of indie fans that agree with you there, Kevin.
