Shabazz Palaces – Of Light EP/ Shabazz Palaces EP (Templar Label Group, 2009)

After 1990s hip-hop outfit Digable Planets dissolved, Ishmael Butler – alias ‘Butterfly’ – pottered around in the hip-hop hinterlands, canning his solo album and founding the roundly ignored Cherrywine. His two 2009 EPs as Shabazz Palaces, however, totally revitilised his fortunes. Butler’s arcane, warped, sci-fi inflected brand of trippy-hop caught a lot of buzz – a deal with indie luminaries Sub Pop swiftly followed. An example of winningly weird late style.
