After years of playing second MPC, Lil B’s resident producer is about to step into the limelight.

Whilst Lil B has been infiltrating the crenellated towers of academia, Keyboard Kid 206 has been putting the finishing touches on The Transition, his first official EP release. 2011’s free d/l Cosmonaut went in for squiggly glitch-hop, whereas this year’s Basedtreasure mixtape was a technicolour collection. The Transition, by contrast, shows our Kid putting his own screwy spin on araabMUZIK’s trance-hop sound.

Brother-in-Based Clams Casino has made his name with clotted, oneric instrumentals. By contrast, Keyboard Kid’s recent beats have been frenetic little constructions. The Transition sees the producer refining his particular strand of digital frenzy. These tracks are pert and scrambled numbers, distracted and distracting.

There are touches of Danja and DJ Toomp, but Keyboard Kid’s music ultimately shares more with antic beatmakers like Rustie or Gold Panda. On tracks like ‘WelcomeX’, whacko experimentalist Dan Deacon springs to mind. In his recent interview with FACT, Keyboard Kid evangelised about the importance of the Based philosophy, but The Transition is quite some way from Lil B’s languid extemporisations. This is busy, bristling music.
