DJ Jus-Ed is one of our favourite house producers and DJs – it’s as simple as that.
The unflappable New York cat will be in London on Saturday, 5 May, for a showcase of his aptly named Underground Quality label at Fabric. Joining him in Room 3 will be Jenifa Mayanja, BLM and Juniper, making this a must for fans of heavy-grooving deep house – more information and tickets can be found here.
To herald his arrival on these shores FACT asked Ed to choose five records that mean a lot to him; he went with four landmark platters from UQ’s history, and one from his wife, the aforementioned Jenifa Mayanja, on her own Bu-Mako imprint. Jus-Ed: “A landmark in UQ labels history…and turns out for the rest of the house scene too. It was the first time I really realised that house music is not just a USA thing or even a black thing, it’s really a spiritual thing…because of this release UQ got put on the map as reputable
and Russia got put on the map for deep house. It started with Anton Zap.”
DJ JUS-ED ‘SWEETNESS’ / ‘FORGIVE ME SON’ (UQ-020, 2009)
Jus-Ed: “This record has two meanings. The B-side ‘Forgive Me Son’ is about me not being able to raise my first born in my first marriage. ‘Sweetness’ is about my daughter…she was in my arms the whole time I wrote this…this is why the track is so emotional!”
JENIFA MAYANJA WOMAN WALKING IN THE SHADOWS – THE REMIX ALBUM (BU-MAKO BU-M018)
Jus-Ed: “Yes, Jen is my wife…but we’re very critical of each others work. This is the first project I’ve really loved and relied on in my DJ sets. It has the right elements for the club…big or small! It has vocals, melodies and BASSlines. I highly recommend it.”
