John Peel’s already had a Glastonbury tent and a train named in his honour.

Dummy report that Peel’s name might now grace a new music and art centre in Bradford. The dilapidated Bradford Odeon previously functioned as a cinema and performance space. A group of residents are currently campaigning for the building to be converted into a venue and exhibition centre, named in honour of the legendary Radio 1 DJ.

The John Peel Creative Arts Centre North promises to be a 1500 capacity live music space, orientated towards new and avant-garde acts. The proposal also includes plans for a museum dedicated to the music scene in the north, and broadcast facilities for local radio stations. Funding is mooted to come from the Arts Council and Lottery bodies. Peel has something of a connection to Bradford: he holds an honorary degree from the University Of Bradford, and made the 1999 Sound Of The Suburbs documentary in the city.

The proposal also promises listening docks which visitors can use to browse the online John Peel archive. The digital series, which collates selected works from Peel’s vast record collection, has just moved onto records beginning with ‘B’.
