After a good few months of inactivity, The Haxan Cloak has stirred again.

Bobby Krlic’s dark solo project doesn’t skimp on ingenuity or ambition. His self-titled debut album on Aurora Borealis was a highly assured assemblage of industrial textures, tumescent bass and modern classical flourishes. As last year’s FACT mix showed, he’s not afraid to wade into Mariana Trench levels of murk, and this new rework of UK psychedelic combo The Rayographs is a fine example of his ingenious shadowplay.

‘My Critical Mind’ is a sterling brew of bowed strings, curdled synths and witching-hour chimes. Like Ben Frost, Krlic carefully negotiates the balance between quiet dread and all-out attack; unlike Frost, he’s not afraid to let light occasionally seep in. Analogue, digital and found sound are all present, but it’s difficult to tell which is which – a fine testament to Krlic’s eye for intricacy. Head over to Dummy to listen.
