Polysick’s Digital Native dallies with sci-fi and dabbles with kitsch.

Our recent review of the Rome resident’s full-length on Planet Mu celebrated the record’s numerous “windows onto a verdant alien landscape”. A new take on the album’s opening track from Drew Lustman, aka Ninja Tune resident FaltyDL, introduces new kinds of strange attractions into Polysick’s star-pocked soundworld.

‘Totem’ was a slinky number, laying library music pads over a jostling drum track imported from Flying Lotus’ Los Angeles. Where Polysick’s original is a modest little creature, Lustman adds some vim and vigour: he introduces some steel drums and strafing clicks and rattles, and bungs in some hip-hop chatter for good measure. More than anything, it’s an exercise in tasteful looping, with Lustman spotting and iterating interesting details in the original. This isn’t, however, a maximalist overhaul: Polysick’s sense of open space is smartly left intact. Grab the mix below, courtesy of Self-Titled Mag.
