After his, erm, invigorating duet with Samuel L. Jackson at last weekend’s BET Awards, veteran filmmaker Spike Lee is returning to what he does best.

Prefix report that Lee is currently finishing up post-production on a new documentary about the life of Michael Jackson. Rather than giving the singer the full bildungsroman treatment, the film will focus directly on Jackson’s 1987 album Bad. As you’d expect, Lee’s assembled a shining roster of talking heads: Kanye West, Cee-Lo Green, Sheryl Crow, Mariah Carey and Martin Scorsese will all talk some well-informed shop for the film.

Lee – best known for socially engaged classics Do The Right Thing (1989) and Jungle Fever (1991) – sounds enthused about the project: “I’m more than just a huge fan of Michael Jackson, and having the chance to actually know him and work with him, I deeply care about his legacy. With this Bad project I was able to uncover just what made this such a huge, important coming of age in his career and unearth compelling stories surrounding the making of the album, the long awaited follow-up to Thriller — the best-selling album of all time — the short films and the tour that may have never seen the light of day.”

Bad celebrates its 25th birthday on September 24. Lee’s film is expected to be released in order to coincide with the anniversary. Jackson’s already been subject to a couple of movie retrospectives, ranging from the glitzy (This Is It) to the asinine (David Gest’s Michael Jackson: The Life Of An Icon)
