Kickstarter might have its detractors, but, on occasion, it can be used to some wonderful whacked-out ends.

Pittsburgh synth combo Black Moth Super Rainbow are currently raising funds for one of the oddest releases since Wayne Coyne decided to play phlebotomoist. Forthcoming album Cobra Juicy will arrive as – wait for it – a latex mask.

A USB stick containing a digital copy of the album will be secreted in the mask’s tooth. The mask will also be backlight reactive, and a select few copies will be hand-painted by BMSR members. More conservative fans will be pleased to hear that Cobra Juicy will also arrive in vinyl, CD and digital editions. An approximation of the mask will appear on the cover art for the record (see right).

Black Moth Super Rainbow have been churning out crude electronic psychedelia since 2003’s Falling Through A Field; they’ve clocked up numerous releases on Graveface (including 2009’s thoroughly enjoyable Eating Us), and have recorded with Dave Fridmann. The band are currently halfway to their $45,000 target, and are offering a glut of goodies to potential patrons over on their Kickstarter page.

Truth told, we’re not entirely convinced we’re looking at the next big format here. Then again, people said that about the compact disc, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself trading your CD rack for a mask cabinet come 2020.The band have also co-opted Eric Wareheim (of cult nut jobs Tim & Eric) to produce a trailer for the record; peek below to enjoy.
