While I agree that the sonic fidelity of vinyl probably pleases my ears because it's what I've listened to all my life, the MAIN reason I play records at home is to prevent laziness. They force me to get up off my arse and do something at least once every 20 minutes.

The simple fact that people can't spell "vinyl" anymore is a sad indicator.

Slow-food for thought. I took the choice to listen to albums in full instead of just tracks because, at the time, it seemed hip and "patrician". But now, five years later, i mostly listen to albums because i want to know what the hell the artist is thinking, how he's doing it and why. It's a mindset.

Can you link me the James Kirby and Rashad Becker interviews if you have them?

But it's not like the days are lost. You chose to lose those days or other chose for you. I still can do what you did even with digital music

While i do think vynil has it's charms i don't agree with his way of thinking. Yes, vynil demands attention. But it's not like you can't listen to an album in full digitally. When i get a hold of a digital album (free or paid for, it doesn'
t matter) and want to listen to it i open up my mediaplayer, clean out the playlist and put on the album. I don't skip a track. It's a mindset. It's not like vynil demands you to sit by the turntable with a serious stare and thick-rimmed glasses, the internet/a book/study is still a distraction. If i'd put on a vynil record and troll on 4Chan i'm still not paying attention to what the hell is playing.

But i do agree with his view on the physical. It's tangible and fun. You grab the record and you take it out, check for dust and scratches and carefully put the needle on the record. Before the track starts, fuzz and blips are a warming-up for things to come.

It's a nice view on things but in my opinion listening to music is it's like something you do or don't. Either you listen to it carefully or you just have it playing in the background as a distraction. The format has little to do with it.

PS: Homwerk Vol. 1 is sounding hella good

This is your coping mechanism, and that's fine. But 10 years ago, I would have been working in 10 windows open on my computer, and would flit between a pile of new vinyl and winamp on my PC. Still the output of worthwhile music wasn't so great then.

The problem is that everyone needs to figure out how to cope for themselves.

I love this! I like listening to vinyl records, but I've never really believed they sound all that different to mp3..
It's just the fact that i'm forced to put my attention more fully to the music, instead of a million other things haha
Great read!!!
