In a conversation with BBC Radio 5 Live, Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo offered some insight into what SY releases are currently lodged in the pipeline.

Ranaldo claimed that demo recordings from the mid 1980s, around the time the band were recording fourth album Sister, are likely to see the light of day in the near future. Ranaldo also claimed the records might appear “maybe for a deluxe edition of that record”, suggesting that we might have a Sister reissue on our hands.

Ranaldo also said that the band will release a vintage live album, mooted to feature recordings from a 1985 concert, in “the next couple of months”, and that more live documents might well follow. A Sonic Youth film is also potentially on the cards: “We’ve got a tour movie we filmed back in ’86 on a U.S. tour for Sister that never saw the light of day, so we’re kind of finishing up the editing on that,” he said, adding, “There’s tons and tons of stuff in our catalog, a series of music we made for films over the years that’s never been released — all kinds of stuff.”

As regards the band’s future as a recording/touring entity, Ranaldo said “it’s impossible to say what the future holds”. The band’s status has been uncertain since lynchpins Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon announced their marriage had broken down last year. [via Exclaim/Slicing Up Eyeballs]
