What Elvis was to the blues, Purity Ring is to "drag," no? Its no accident this record is "Best New Music" over at Pitchfork and while Salem's first records were intensely panned over there.

I know these two quite well and you'd be hard pressed to find much nicer people. Say what you want about how they act, or what you think of their music, but save the defamation until you talk to them.

i find it hard to view this album as a 'milestone' of any kind. this is not Burial. it may be correct that this is the logical result of the last few years of music in this scene, but i hardly see this as a good result.

This is a horrible collision of elements of 'internet popular' music from the past couple of years (clams casino, trap rap beats, dubstep bass) thrown together with a cute girl singing without doing anything new musically.

It's insufferably pandering, the songs are formulaic. it's like they scanned the front page of The Fader and took bits from everything thats popular and smashed them together. I suppose you have to give them for targeting a demographic so specifically, but I almost feel insulted by it

No thanks.

Dressing like Hitler? You are the one who insinuated that they were a couple of "twats."

Great review. I for one was blown away by the emotional weight of Untrue, so it made sense to lead with that as a foundation of the current electronic movement. I definitely appreciate the paradigm shift that album brought, and it's nice to see a clear breakdown of the resulting subgenres which eventually realign and collide with hip-hop in Shrines, which now seems like as important a milestone as Burial was. I've noticed a parallel progression of production styles between hip-hop/r&b and the hazy bedroom projects for a while, and so to have a succinct recognition of these merging sounds is fascinating. Clams Casino, Washed Out, How To Dress Well, Frank Ocean, James Blake, Purity Ring.... it's all becoming more atmospheric and yet I don't think they are sounding necessarily the same. Maybe just the same level of texture and space in the songs.

I also really like the album art on this release.

Oh, and the music is great. So who gives a #@*^ what they act like anyways?
