Hard Wax, Berlin’s most esteemed retailer of quality dance music vinyl, recently launched its digital store.

Now, for the first time, it’s making all the 12″ releases of Maurizio and Rhythm & Sound available, unabridged, in mp3 and lossless AIFF formats. Yes, some of the tracks on these classic records, produced by Moritz Von Oswald and Hard Wax proprietor Mark Ernestus, have been released digitally before – but mostly in edited form.

The so-called M-Series, comprised of nine 12″s of stripped-down, low-slung and dub-infused techno released between 1992-1997, remains every bit as influential as Ernestus and Von Oswald’s prior and parallel work as Basic Channel. All the 12″s are credited to the duo’s Maurizio alias, apart from M-2, which was produced by Vainqueur (Rene Lowe of Scion and Tyros); M-3, ‘Domina’, is backed with a classic Carl Craig remix.

Having applied dub strategies to techno with their work as Maurizio and Basic Channel, Rhythm & Sound found Ernestus and Von Oswald applying techno strategies to dub, with astonishing results. Their crisp, minimal tracks in this vein include a remix of a previously unreleased ’79 Bullwackies production voiced by The Chosen Brothers, and the Paul St. Hilaire-featuring ‘Music A Fe Rule’. It’s quite simple: music doesn’t get better than this.
