Beck teams up with McSweeney’s for Beck Hansen’s Song Reader.

The indie rock outsider’s follow-up to Modern Guilt will take his experimental instincts to his logical conclusion: a book of twenty pieces of sheet music, never before released or recorded. The press release promises that the Song Reader will come “complete with full-color, heyday-of-home-play-inspired art for each song and a lavishly produced hardcover carrying case (and, when necessary, ukelele notation).”

Featuring original art from Marcel Dzama (who created the imagery for Beck’s Guero), Leanne Shapton, Josh Cochran, Jessica Hische, and many more, the Song Reader will be available in December. Renditions of the songs by readers (and more interestingly, by “select musicians”) will be featured on the McSweeney’s website.

For music actually performed by Beck, fans will have to stick with Playstation game scores for now. He is also playing a surprise show tomorrow at Bimbo’s in San Francisco; tickets are on sale today.
