Three members of Pussy Riot, standing trial in a Russian court, will hear their sentences on Friday.

Since their demonstration in a Moscow cathedral in February – and subsequent arrest – numerous celebrities have come out in support of the band; not least Peaches, who helped launch a petition calling for their release which has picked up almost 100,000 signatures.

In a statement, Peaches said that she was “deeply troubled that the Russian government is punishing its citizens for voicing their opinions through music,” describing music as “an essential tool for voicing opinions about everything from gender to oppression,” and stating that “to outlaw the free expression of these ideas is to embrace tyranny.”

As such, the Canadian singer has now gone one step further by writing a song in support of the band, ‘Free Pussy Riot’ [via Pitchfork]. It’s a suitably abrasive affair, calling for church and state to be separate (a reference to pressure from the Russian Orthodox Church to convict the three women), and telling Putin on no uncertain terms that “Pussy Riot run this shit”.

Its video apparently features fellow artist-sympathisers including the Knife, Lyyke Li, Peter Bjorn & John, the Hives, Margaret Cho, Miike Snow, Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kate Nash, Jake Shears of the Scissor Sisters, Light Asylum, and many more – although, given that the majority are wearing Pussy Riot-style balaclavas, it’s difficult to be certain.
