Flying Lotus unveils new short film, inspired by album 'When The Quiet Comes'

Flying Lotus – the closest thing the leftfield hip-hop community has to a bona fide superstar – has only gone and done a Kanye on us.

Eschewing the standard ‘album trailer’ route, the Brainfeeder boss has commissioned a short film in honour of forthcoming album Until The Quiet Comes. Admittedly, it’s a fairly slim affair compared to Yeezy’s sprawling ‘Runaway’, but ‘When The Quiet Comes’ has all the trappings of a proper film: sumptuous cinematography, a gritty narrative, and a poster to boot (see below).

Kahlil Joseph’s beautiful film features blood, intrigue, and some (spectacularly well shot) tenement yard krumping. The beats, meanwhile, are definitely from the jazzier end of the spectrum: as per the Erykah Badu-assisted lead track ‘See Thru To U’, it looks like When The Quiet Comes will be the producer’s most taciturn record to date.

When The Quiet Comesis due on October 2, via Warp. Flying Lotus, we recently learned, is also spending time in the studio with Beck.
