Darkstar are back with their first material since 2010 debut LP North.

Originally made up of the duo of Aiden Whalley and James Young, Darkstar caught the eye back in the late Noughties with some fantastically frazzled garage-inflected singles (‘Aidy’s Girl Is A Computer’,  ‘Need You’) for Hyperdub. The group, augmented by singer James Buttery, chose to twist on North, reimagining themselves as a sleek electro-pop outfit.

Centred around a music box melody, ‘Timeaway’ is certainly unchartered territory for the group: there’s little of the glitchy retro-isms of North, and barely a whiff of the mutant 2-step they traded in back in the day. The band describe the record as “very much us looking forward. It’s off-kilter, processed and bubbles and moves right through”.

‘Timeaway’ is available to download in full here. The single will see release as a 12″ next month, and will feature 10 locked-groove loops to boot.
