Two forward-thinking Australian artists are collaborating on a new LP for reliable stable Kranky.

Twisted guitarist/drummer Oren Ambarchi has had a typically work-heavy year, knocking out his Sagittarian Domain LP on Editions Mego, releasing on Touch and working with Keiji Haino and regular collaborator Stephen O’ Malley as Zanoranai. Cross-disciplinary artist Robin Fox, meanwhile, has been touring his utterly spellbinding laser A/V shows (recently showcased at this year’s MUTEK festival).

The pair are now primed to release a joint album, Connected. The compositions are taken from a contemporary dance piece of the same name, directed by Gideon Obarzanek and produced by Chunky Move. Fox covers digital processing, whereas Ambarchi teases melodic motifs and harmonics out of his guitar.

Connected track ‘Standing Mandala’ is now available to download, and it’s utterly excellent. Over a locked groove – not a million miles away from Peaking Lights’ milquetoast motorik – Ambarchi’s guitar sings and moans. It’s oddly funky, and somehow manages to sound simultaneously taut and relaxed. Hard to describe, but we’ll plump for “underwater car chase music”. [via The Fader]

Connected is out later this month on Kranky.
