Avalanches and Massive Attack sign up for King Kong musical

Prepare yourselves for “one of the most ambitious productions to come out of Australia”.

As In The Mix report, Sydney theatre company Global Creatures have announced a major new stage production of King Kong. The show, which will run for 12 weeks in Melbourne, is set to involve musical contributions from some surprisingly major artists.

AWOL collagists Avalanches are signed up to contribute new musical material to the score. Massive Attack’s 3D has also produced a fresh composition for the show, as have Gallic electro types Justice and ultra-successful Canadian singer Sarah McLachlan. Regular Bjork collaborator Marius de Vries is also taking a leading role in proceedings.

The performance will involve “modernized musical standards from the world’s best contemporary artists…from the classical strings of the ocean waves to electronica, the drum & bass of King Kong running as his fist pounds the earth.” A thirty minute promotional trailer for the performance is available here – you can hear 3D’s effort, Colossus, at the 17 minute mark.

The show sounds like quite the spectacular: circus artists, large-scale projections and, of course, are all set to feature. A video trailer of Justice talking about the production is below.
