Major London venue The O2 is to be sold off by its current owners.

The Evening Standard reports that venue owners Anschutz Entertainment Group – known to the layman as AEG – have judged it an “appropriate time” for the venue to pass into new hands. The US concert behemoth, who acquired the venue for £850m back in 2002,  reportedly intends to “maximise value for all concerned”, leading to speculation from the paper that the group may be being broken up.

Clued-up observers suggest that the sale could fetch up to £4.25bn. With the possible exception of Wembley Arena, the venue has become arguably London’s most iconic major venue, hosting the likes of Prince, Led Zeppelin and, this week, Radiohead. There’s already been trouble afoot in the venue this month: sub-venue Proud2 had its licence temporarily revoked after a series of stabbings.
