Opened in 1982, Manchester’s Fac 51 Haçienda – or, as most know it, simply the Haçienda – is one of the UK’s most talked-about and mythologised clubs.
Forever associated with New Order, Madchester and acid house, the club, housed on Whitworth St West, was closed in June 1997 following various issues. That hasn’t stopped it retaining a presence as one of the world’s most talked-about venues, however, and this year its 30th birthday has been celebrated with a new triple mix-CD and exhibition-cum-recreation at the Victoria & Albert Museum.
We’ve also been celebrating it at FACT: a month or so back, we interviewed club co-owner and former New Order and Joy Division bassist Peter Hook, and today we’re offering an exclusive look around the original Haçienda, as its staff saw it, and as Ikon Films shot it, back in ’82:
