Ex-DFA Records manager Justin Miller launches new label

The former DFA label manager strikes out on his own.

After seven years with the influential New York label, Justin Miller will launch his own imprint in November called HAKT Recordings, after Have A Killer Time, a series of NY parties that Miller has run for years.

Speaking with Resident Advisor, Miller says he left DFA at the beginning of this year to take a break from the music industry. What was supposed to be a year off only lasted eight months.

“I’ve always wanted to have my own label—preferably R&B, but dance music is cool, too. But yeah: at an early age, I came to respect the curatorial magic behind the artist that a label represents,” he says.

The label’s first release is an EP from Walter Jones, a New Orleands-based house artist, who released the I’ll Keep On Loving You EP on DFA in 2009 (stream the title track below). Jones’ Utopiano Project will be out on November 5.
