The New York sample phreaker explores associative music on the MiDi Murder EP.

Hot Sugar (aka Nick Koenig) emerged earlier this year with his left-field Moon Money EP on Ninja Tune. Koenig samples from field recordings and found sounds, which gives his beats an otherworldy character that — while outside the familiar scope of most hip-hop — is reminiscent of indie rap’s salad days.

His MiDi Murder EP features something for all seasons, from the modem-sampling ’56K’ to the slinky boom-bap of ‘Steady Moving.’ Featured rappers come from both coasts of the underground hip-hop scene: anxious phenom Haleek Maul, Green Ova’s Shady Blaze, Heems and Kool AD from Das Racist, Antwon, and Chippy Nonstop, among others.
