The mutual regard between Stones Throw and Leaving Records continues on a new remix.

Both imprints have a fair bit in common: as with Stones Throw, Matthewdavid’s boutique label is based in L.A. and has a soft spot for slanted hip-hop (although, where Stones Throw lean towards classic soul, Leaving throws its allegiances in with IDM and glitch). Yesterday evening, the labels announced a collaborative double cassette compilation, featuring material from the likes of Julia Holter, Odd Nosdam and Sun Araw.

Matthewdavid (who’s clocked up a bunch of notable releases on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint) has now remixed recent Stones Throw signing Chrome Canyon, with predictably corroded results. In his hands, ‘Memories Of A Scientist’ becomes a crawling bit of serrated beat music. It’s fairly straight down the line compared to Matthewdavid’s early soundscapes (see 2008’s Spills on Plug Research), but his interests in musique concrete are still present and correct in this bustling, tangled refix.
