Manchester to celebrate Delia Derbyshire Day this Saturday

BBC Radiophonic Workshop figurehead Delia Derbyshire is to have her contribution to electronic music celebrated with a day of specially programmed events in Manchester.

As The Guardian report, Delia Derbyshire Day will take place on Saturday January 12, with shows and screenings being hosted by Band On The Wall in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. Kara Blake’s documentary The Delian Mode, which features contributions from Portishead’s Adrian Utley and Sonic Boom, will be broadcast, with a Q&A session to follow. Contemporary electronic ensemble the Delia Darlings (classical composer Ailís Ní Ríain, gramophone manipulator Naomi Kashiwagi and sound artist Caro C) will present a series of new works inspired by Derbyshire, complete with live visuals from Blake. A panel discussion of Derbyshire’s work will also take place.

Head to the Band On The Wall website for more information about the festivities. The Radiophonic Workshop was revived in 2012, supervised by Matthew Herbert (who, as it happens, also has his own dedicated Day).

A trailer for the day’s events is below.
