Brooklyn bass freaks Jubilee and Star Eyes share pair of grimy tracks via Unknown to the Unknown

Dark arts, 808 flavors, and late night Rinse FM sessions: two veterans craft their own brand of grime.

Earlier today, DJ Haus’ digital sandbox Unknown to the Unknown released two tracks from the Brooklyn-based pairing of Star Eyes and Jubilee. Both NY underground fixtures, Star Eyes (fresh off an EP for Trouble & Bass, the label she co-runs) and Jubilee (who hosts Fireworks on Brooklyn Radio) are long-time friends and natural collaborators, considering their shared obsession with all things bass.

While the pair have worked together on remixes for Creep, Mikix the Cat and Drop the Lime, these tracks are their first originals — and they’re worth the wait. ‘Locked’ would more accurately be titled ‘Locked & Loaded’, with its ruptured synths and supersaturation of grime-land samples, while ‘Merkwood Estates’ is an underworld take on the club-ready 808s of Miami bass and Jersey club.

“When we lived together, we used to regularly stay up til 5 a.m. watching grime clashes on YouTube and listening to Rinse FM and screaming at each other about tracks from our adjacent rooms,” Star Eyes says, via email. “We set out to make grime, but we’re American and we both love stuff like Miami bass and Jersey club so influences from that crept in. You can hear a pretty even mix of our styles here… Star Eyes with the dark arts and Jubilee with the 808 flavors, and lots of gunshots and wolves everywhere.”

The pair have a DJ mix dropping soon, and they’ll be playing both solo and together at SXSW and in Miami. Star Eyes has collaborations with Curses! and Lazy Ants dropping soon, and they’re both “juicing and working on solo EPs cos its fucking freezing in NYC.” Stream ‘Locked’ below and download the pair over on Sendspace.
