The Mars Volta's Cedric Bixler-Zavala confirms solo LP of "AM radio love songs"

Texan prog combo The Mars Volta may be no more, but its key members are keeping busy.

Guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez has unveiled new act Bosnian Rainbows, ostensibly ditching The Mars Volta’s high-volume noodling in favour of theatrical alt.pop. Former partner-in-crime Cedric Bixler-Zavala has now followed suit, promising a solo album of “sweet luv songs”.

As Exclaim report, Bixler-Zavala has revealed through his Twitter account that he has just finished tracking three songs for a forthcoming solo LP. The tracks, recorded in California with Noah Georgeson, feature the Mars Volta’s Juan Alderete, plus Axis Of Justice bit-player Jonny Polonsky and Megapuss’ Gregory Rogove. Bixler-Zavala promises the following:

“Lots of desert ballad space jams, lots of harmonies, lots of lap steel and piano. Lots of AM radio love songs. Short bitter sweet luv songs. Be warned I’m not making a rock record. It might lightly rock but not like I’m known for.”

Formed after the dissolution of post-hardcore titans At The Drive-In, The Mars Volta released seven LPs of tangled post-rock and contemproary prog. Their last disc was 2012’s Noctourniquet.
