South African kwaito house star DJ Spoko unveils 'Batauweng'

Atteridgeville’s DJ Spoko – the uncredited force behind DJ Mujava’s ‘Township Funk’, and a crucial player in the South African house scene – is about to issue his first ever Western release, Ghost Town.

The three-track EP, distributed by True Panther, sees Spoko and his Ghetto Boyz Entertainment crew set out their robust, club-friendly stall for a global audience. ‘Batauweng’ features vocal contributions from Kapa Kapa, and shows off the more nuanced elements of Spoko’s “bacardi house” sound. Where, say, ‘Cucumba’ is relentlessly exuberant and hooky, ‘Batauweng’ has a melancholic streak amidst all the percussive shuffle and ersatz horn stabs.

Stream the track below. Ghost Town will drop on March 5.
