Nine Inch Nails return, "reinvented from scratch" with members of Telefon Tel Aviv and more

Industrial titans Nine Inch Nails will return for live shows this year, with a “reinvented from scratch” line-up.

A statement from band leader and only official member Trent Reznor, who had seemingly been focused on new group How to Destroy Angels, explains that Nine Inch Nails will start playing live shows again this Summer, followed by a “full-on arena tour” of the US in Autumn and worldwide dates in 2014.

“I was working with [multi-instrumentalist, King Crimson member and contributor to various Nine Inch Nails albums] Adrian Belew on some musical ideas”, explains Reznor, “which led to some discussion on performing, which led to some beard-scratching, which (many steps later) led to the decision to re-think the idea of what Nine Inch Nails could be, and the idea of playing a show. Calls were made to some friends, lots of new ideas were discussed, and a show was booked – which led to another, which somehow led to a lot of shows.

“The band is reinventing itself from scratch and will be comprised of Eric Avery [of Jane's Addiction], Adrian Belew, Alessandro Cortini [live musician with NIN], Josh Eustis [Telefon Tel Aviv], Ilan Rubin, and me. The first shows will begin this summer, followed by a full-on arena tour of the US this fall, and lots of other dates worldwide to follow through 2014″. It was previously thought that 2009′s Wave Goodbye tour, on which Ilan Rubin also played, would be the group’s last [via Pitchfork].

Stream a performance of ‘Hurt’, from that tour, below. Update: Sources tell Billboard that Nine Inch Nails will return to Chicago’s Lollapalooza, a festival the band last played in 2008.
