The sprightlier half of Underworld invites you to meet ‘The Boy With The Jigsaw Puzzle Fingers’.

25 years after the release of Underworld’s debut LP Underneath The Radar, Hyde is stepping out on his own with his first-ever solo album. Edgeland will see the singer team-up with Brian Eno/Pulp affiliate Leo Abrahams for an album celebrating “edgelands where city meets scrub, where ragged ponies graze annexed fields and the air smells chemical”.

In contrast to the pastoral ‘Cut Clouds’, Hyde’s latest is a wonky, keening synthpop track. For the duration of the verses, ‘The Boy With The Jigsaw Puzzle Fingers’ is an experimental pop number, similar in spirit to Gudrun Gut’s recent Wildlife LP. The chorus, however, is pure Pet Shop Boy sugar-rush, showing off Hyde The Hitmaker as well as Hyde The Soundtracker.

‘The Boy With The Jigsaw Puzzle Fingers’ is out soon, with Edgeland due on April 22.  Remixes come from the inimitable Matthew Herbert and Kasket, last heard on the freshly rebooted Apollo label. Hyde’s upcoming tour dates are below.
