Prince confirmed for intimate show at SXSW

Those of you currently in Austin take note: Prince will be performing at SXSW.

An appearance from the Purple One at the Texan festival / industry meet and greet has been heavily rumoured over the last couple of days, and now it’s been confirmed. Prince will headline Samsung’s SXSW closing party on March 16, but don’t get too excited just yet: the show’s capacity is only 250, and the only way to be in with a chance of entry is to own a Samsung Galaxy phone, or be an SXSW Platinum and Music Badge Holder. The SXSW website goes into more detail:

There will be two ways to secure a spot for this special concert: the first is for Samsung Galaxy owners in Austin for SXSW to click here for details about the Samsung Galaxy Experience.

The second way is through a ticket drawing for SXSW Platinum and Music badge holders beginning now. To determine which SXSW Badge holders will be admitted, SXSW will conduct a ticket drawing, which will grant entry for Platinum and Music Badge Holders only. No other credentials are eligible to enter these drawings.

It might be the way of the world right now, but the ticketing process seems like a shame to us, and certainly adds fuel to the argument that SXSW has become too dominated by sponsors. On the plus side, if you’re one of the thousands of people who can’t get in, you can always reassure yourself with the fact that Prince might focus on his new material. And even if he doesn’t, someone will have uploaded ‘Erotic City’ to YouTube the next day anyway.
