SpinMedia acquires <em>Vibe</em>, likely to be online-only

The online conglomerate formerly known as BuzzMedia acquires another magazine.

Last year, BuzzMedia added Spin magazine to a portfolio that already included Stereogum, Hype Machine, and XLR8R; by the end of the year, the magazine had halted print publication.

BuzzMedia is now SpinMedia, and The New York Times reports that its latest acquisition is Vibe, the R&B and hip-hop magazine founded in 1992 by legendary producer Quincy Jones and Time Warner. The sale (for an undisclosed price) rejoins two brands that were part of the same company more than a decade ago.

After Spin ended its print magazine, online traffic doubled. With that in mind, Steve Hansen, SpinMedia’s chief executive, said the company would probably shut down Vibe’s print magazine later this year. “We are still trying to find a print model that makes economic sense in the digital age,” he said.
