Tom Moulton, often credited as the creator of the dance remix, is to have his works collected once again on a new compilation

Inspired by the late 1960s dance scene at NYC satellite Fire Island, the one-time male model produced his own extended reel-to-reel tapes of dancefloor-friendly soul and funk 45s – one of the earliest and most infamous recorded mixes in existence. Working in A&R at Scepter Records, he subsequently set two major milestones in contemporary music: his remix of Don Downing’s ‘Dream World’ is regularly pinpointed as the first use of the disco break, and his edit of Al Downing’s ‘I’ll Be Holding On’ was the first ever 12″ single, pressed due to a shortage of 7″ discs. At once hugely important and hugely prolific, his place in the annals of dance music history is indisputable.

New Harmless compilation Philly Re-Grooved 3: More From The Master will assemble 19 edits from Moulton’s heyday, including two previously unreleased tracks. An assortment of Philly acts all undergo the Moulton treatment, including The Trammps, The Spinners, Blue Magic, Bettye Swann and William DeVaughn. The featured tracks have been sourced from the archives of the likes of Atlantic, Columbia, Defected, Roxbury, Atco, Chelsea and Buddha. The collection follows previous Philly Re-Grooved editions in 2010 and 2011.

Harmless will release Philly Re-Grooved 3: More From The Master on May 13.
