Music industry trade organization BPI looks to force ISPs to block torrent sites.

TorrentFreak reports on the latest volley in the industry-piracy battle. BPI’s newest initiative follows the group’s efforts to block torrent sites KickAssTorrents, H33T and Fenopy, which the High Court ordered ISPs to do in February 2013. An industry insider tells TorrentFreak that BPI, via music licensing group PPL, is again reaching out to its members in advance of an even larger domain blocking push.

“Over the past years, UK music labels have innovated to build one of the most vibrant digital music sectors in the world. However, the growth of digital music in the UK is held back by a raft of illegal businesses commercially exploiting music without a licence from the copyright holders,” the communication begins. “In considering what next steps to take, BPI would like to know if any PPL record company members have, in the UK, licensed their recorded music to the operators of the below websites.”

TorrentFreak describes the subsequent list as “the world’s largest BitTorrent, file-hosting, and MP3 search engine websites in the world,” including 1337x, BitSnoop, ExtraTorrent, Isohunt, TorrentReactor, TorrentHound, Torrentz, Filestube, and frequent industry target Grooveshark, among others. The members are being asked to respond to BPI’s legal department by May 21.
