Watch a two-hour video of legendary New York club Paradise Garage's 1987 closing party

A two hour video of the legendary New York club’s closure has appeared on YouTube.

Founded by Michael Brody in NYC’s King Street, 1976, the Paradise Garage is considered one of house and disco music’s most important breeding grounds, with the influential Larry Levan as a resident DJ and a lasting influence on both LGBT and clubbing culture – stars as big as Madonna attending over the years.

DJ SimonC, who runs the Paradise Garage Facebook page, has uploaded two hours of footage from a pair of closing parties in August 1987 (22nd and 27th), and the club’s last ever party the next month. “To the best of my knowledge”, explains C, “there are snippets of it online but not the whole film. Some of the footage was used in the Mel Cheren documentary Maestro.”

“The video is raw and sound is sketchy in places but perfectly enjoyable. Look out for a very special moment in the film where you can Keith Haring is on the floor dancing to Phyllis Hyman – “You Know How To Love Me” (1hr 26 mins)”

You can watch it below, via Hyponik. Last month Soul Clap talked to FACT about Larry Levan for our regular On Record feature – you can read that here.
