Q. What do you get if you cross M. Geddes Gengras, Boredoms, Sun Araw and a stash of old synths?

Footloose L.A. artist Gengras has worked across a range of fields over the last few years, releasing suites for Moog, recording with the likes of Akron/Family and Pocahaunted, and putting out everything from drone to sort-of-house. His most regular collaborator, however, is Sun Araw (himself responsible for a string of albums of battered psych), with whom he put out last year’s reggae curveball ICON GIVE THANKS with The Congos. Butchy Fuego, meanwhile, drums for Japrock loons Boredoms, and also records as San Gabriel. Together, they become The Celebrate Music Synthesizer Group.

Around this time last year, the trio convened at Rotterdam’s legendary The Worm studio – a grotto of vintage synths and hard-to-find analogue equipment. Recording straight onto two-track tape, the group laid down an extensive collection of improvisations and jams, and the results are documented on the The Celebrate Music Synthesizer Group 2xLP. The results have been whittled down to nine-tracks for the collection, due on Drag City offshoot Sun Ark.

A sample track, ‘Warung Mini’, is available to stream below, and features all sorts of radiophonic larking over a robust 120bpm beat. The Celebrate Music Synthesizer Group is due on September 17 through Sun Ark. [via Juno Plus]
