David Bowie publishes list of his 100 favourite books

Ziggy played guitar – but, on occasion, he’d squeeze in some light reading too.

Following on from the V&A’s wildly successful run, Toronto’s Art Gallery of Ontario is currently playing host to the David Bowie Is exhibition, featuring a host of Bowie ephemera from diary fragments through to vintage costumes. In honour of the exhibit, the gallery have published a rundown of Bowie’s 100 “must-read books” – and the results make for a fascinating reading list.

The earliest text on the list, Richard Wright’s Black Boy, dates back to 1945; the latest, Susan Jacoby’s The Age Of American Unreason, was published in 2008. Inbetween are a string of usual suspects (Nineteen Eight-Four, Lolita, On The Road, A Clockwork Orange), some key musical texts (John Cage’s Silence: Lectures And Writing, Charlie Gillete’s The Sound of the City: The Rise of Rock and Roll), and a clutch of political works (Christopher Hitchens’ The Trial Of Henry Kissinger and Orlando Figes’ 1997 guide to the Russian Revolution among them). Oh, and Viz, naturally.

Head here to read the list in full; alternatively, cast your eyes below for the full bibliography. Bowie will be able to expand his bookshelf when he probably wins the Mercury Music Prize later this month. Earlier this week, Bowie announced an expanded version of his The Next Day LP, featuring a remix from none other than James Murphy. [via Pitchfork]
