Clothing company to release posthumous J Dilla/Joey Bada$$ collaboration

Not for the first time this year – hell, not even for the fourth time – some unreleased J Dilla business is set to see the light of day.

Clothing company Akomplice have created a number of Dilla-inspired items, including a crew neck sweatshirt and a T-shirt featuring a picture of the producer’s face surrounded by clouds. To toast the new garb, the company are also issuing an exclusive 7″, featuring an unheard Dilla beat.

The track, ‘Two Lips’, features on the A-side of the disc. The flip, meanwhile, sees NY breakout Joey Bada$$ spitting bars over the instrumental. Bada$$ sounds enthused about the prospect of turning his hand to an authentic Dilla beat, saying: “This project has been a dream come true, working with the soul of my favourite producer of all time is an honour.”

The 7″ and the clothes will go on sale on November 21. The store will also release a faux newspaper, featuring interviews with Bada$$ and Dilla’s mother, Maureen ‘Ma Dukes’ Yancey.

On the topic, FACT’s Laurent Fintoni recently used Dilla’s posthumous career as a jump-off point to discuss whether life-after-death releases are something be celebrated or rejected. Dilla, naturally, features in our recent rundown of the greatest beat tapes of the last 15 years.
