Beck details California-inspired Morning Phase LP, the first of three albums on the way

The multitalented Californian looks to his home state for inspiration and reveals tons more music on the way.

Beck has shared more details about his forthcoming Morning Phase album, out next February through Capitol and billed as a companion piece to 2002’s Sea Change.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, the solo artist explained that the follow-up to 2008’s Modern Guilt comes from the lineage of “California music”, saying: “I’m hearing the Byrds, Crosby Stills and Nash, Gram Parsons, Neil Young—the bigger idea of what that sound is to me.”

The record features a number of musicians from Sea Change, including Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Joey Waronker (currently playing in Atoms for Peace), Smokey Hormel, and Roger Joseph Manning Jr. Beck’s dad, David Campbell, was in charge of the brass and string arrangements once again.

Three of the album’s songs – ‘Waking Light’, ‘Blackbird Chain’ and ‘Country Dawn’ – were recorded in Nashville at Jack White’s Third Man Records back in 2011, during sessions which also produced a single for Third Man.

Beck also revealed that Morning Phase is the second new album he has completed since 2008’s Modern Guilt. Though he shelved it after completion, that untitled record has been the source for his recent series of privately issued 12-inch singles, including ‘Gimme’ and ‘I Won’t Be Long’, and he intends to release the entire album in that manner. On top of that, he is already halfway through a follow-up to Morning Phase that he hopes to release later next year.

The multi-instrumentalist recently revealed he’d suffered a severe spinal injury that had affected his ability to play music for several years.
