The ever-reliable crate-digging label Light in the Attic opens its first bricks-and-mortar shop in Seattle today (Friday 5).

Established in 2002, the label has made its name reissuing rare and hard-to-find releases (Rodriguez and PiL, for instance) as well as distributing albums for labels like horror soundtrack specialists Death Waltz. Most recently they put out a compilation of new age music, which FACT’s Joe Muggs hailed as “music to turn up loud and let overwhelm you”.

The label’s success recently necessitated a move to a larger warehouse in Ballard, a neighbourhood in the northwest of Seattle, where they’ve now set up a small shop.

“We’ve always had a dream to open a retail space at the front of the office,” label co-founder Josh Wright told Seattle Weekly. Space constraints mean that not everything available online will be offered in the shop, but there will be an extensive selection of CDs and vinyl from Light in the Attic and other labels that they distribute, along with some in-store-only releases and exclusive 45s.

The shop at 913 N.W. 50th St. will be open Fridays from 1–5pm to start with. If you can make it to today’s opening from 4-9pm you’ll find free beer, a Thai food truck and giveaways, plus a live set from Kevin Murphy (of Moondoggies) and DJs Johnny Horn and Supreme La Rock.
