2014 will be a year of celebration for the international festival, starting with its Spanish offshoot turning five.

MUTEK, the International Festival for Digital Creativity and Electronic Music, has just announced the first headliners for its MUTEK.ES 2014 edition which will mark the fifth anniversary of the Barcelona offshoot. This follows from MUTEK.MX, in Mexico City, celebrating ten years in October and will lead up to the 15th anniversary of MUTEK Montreal, the original festival, set to take place in May 2014.

In a statement issued on its website, organisers explained the approach behind their choice of artists:

For its 5th edition, MUTEK.ES will be carefully concocting a mix of artists and projects that have stood for their performances at MUTEK editions in Barcelona, in Mexico, or in Montreal over the last five years. The MUTEK.ES 2014 festival program thus aims to transmit the spirit and aims of the MUTEK network over its 15 years of building bridges between creativity and technology.

The first confirmed artists for the festival include Kode 9, Laurel Halo and Scratcha DVA under the ’10 Years of Hyperdub’ banner, Marcel Dettman, Andy Stott, Nils Frahm and Deadbeat with Tikiman.

In addition to the first line up details the festival have also announced a change of dates. The 2014 edition of MUTEK.ES will take place from March 5 to 8 instead of its normal February slot. The organisers hope the move will “make room for more outdoor and family programs within the festival.”

The central location will remain Convent Sant Augusti, where the daytime conference program will take place. Nitsa Club and Moog remain the main partners for the night time festivities alongside new venues, and the festival is also promising special collaborations for its audiovisual performance series to be announced soon.

Last but not least the festival remains committed to supporting Barcelona and Spain’s local scenes and will be announcing a line up of emerging talent for this 5th edition in January.
